My work about pollution in Delhi was awarded first prize in the Environment Story Category at the Best of Photojournalism 2020 (BOP) Awards, hosted by the NPPO (National Press Photographers Association). When I went there three months ago, I photographed people wearing masks. This was totally normal because Delhi it’s the world’s most polluted city, but never for a moment did I imagine that wearing masks would also become the norm in Italy. The reason is of course different, but something tells me that humanity’s battles against pollution, again the spread of viruses and disease, against poverty and ignorance, are all connected.
